Fairport, NY Erie Canal August 7, 2015

It was a great morning in Newark. I turned on the radio to listen to the debate feedback for a while before I started the day. Jim and I walked to the post office to mail a sympathy card to a friend whose son had died. We stopped on a bridge and took this picture. It shows Annie and Liberty docked in Newark, with a bridge over the canal leading west. We went under that bridge at 8:00, headed for Fairport.

Here are some pictures Kerry shot while traveling today. The bicycle trail runs over 100 miles along the canal, all the way to buffalo.

The trip to Fairport was much shorter than yesterday, only 17 miles, and two locks. The locks today were in bad shape so we had to be careful our fenders did not get swallowed up by them.

We arrived at 11:00. On the way we made it under a bridge that was only 15'6" high, which is as low as they go on the canal - so we will be able to get all the way through. It would have been a huge bummer to have to turn around and start back! Fairport has a famous lift bridge that was in the Guinness book of world records. One end is higher than the other, it is built on a slat and no two angles on the entire bridge are the same. Our trip tomorrow will start under that bridge, which opens on demand starting at 7:00 AM. Dockage here cost $9 and includes showers, restrooms and free wifi - a bargain any day.

We all shared the leftover sandwich from yesterday for lunch, then went exploring. We found a statue of Sal, the famous mule. Here are some pictures of Sal.

Exploring means shopping, of course. Kerry found a nice pair of new white shorts in a consignment shop for $1.50. I found my first ever consignment tool store. They had screwdrivers and wrenches for buy one, get two free. I picked out 2 offset screwdrivers, and Jim bought a screw starter. Since his was $.50 and mine were $.25 each, he had to pay for his, and I got mine free! I said that worked out really well. He agreed that it did, then said "Wait a minute!", but it was too late by then.

Jola made a delicious chicken dinner for us tonight. I can't seem to spell it, but it is spoken "pop-re-kash. I bought a take out of General Tso's chicken with fried rice and extra egg rolls to fill out the dinner which we enjoyed on Liberty. We agreed to depart at 7:30 tomorrow.

  1. Love Sal pics! Everyone looks great! My nephew and his girlfriend are biking to Buffalo (think it's the same bike path). Happy Erie Canal boating!
